Recently I found myself jamming out to my favorite Rihanna album in the car while driving to a place I’d never been before, so I was using GPS to guide me there. As I was getting close to my destination my GPS instructed me to make a turn that made no sense to me at all. What did I do? I paused the music.
There are times in life where we find ourselves on cruise control, coasting through our days without much consideration or intention. But there are other times that life deserves more focus. When you complete a major goal you had set for yourself, or you experience a huge setback in a relationship, or when you feel yourself start to drift into complacency or even depression, that’s a sign it’s time to push pause on all the external noise and refocus.
The start of a new year is another great time to pause and reflect on the past year, as well as to consider how you’d like the next year to play out. We’ve all heard it said…if you aim for nothing, you’ll hit it every time. Time is our most valuable life resource; it isn’t a renewable energy you get to buy more of when you run out.
Most of us live on a budget – another words we plan ahead for how we want to spend our money. And how much more precious to us is our life (our years)? Yet many people go year after year without making any sort of plan for what they want to accomplish.
Some people shun the idea of making new year’s resolutions. They joke about how miserably everyone fails at following through on them. But it’s a proven fact that someone who plans how to accomplish a goal will always get closer to doing so than the person without a plan, even if they don’t quite make the mark. Others are so caught up in their own busyness, or with taking care of the needs of others that they fail to care for themselves by envisioning their best year yet, and writing out a plan to see it come to fruition.
It’s perfectly healthy to pause and let the world spin without your help for a while. And if you don’t, you will likely burn out, and most certainly not accomplish all you had wished. So refill your bucket on a regular basis. Catch your breath, find quiet solitude, focus inward, and make time to grow.
My prayer for you and I in 2016 is that we will experience growth in every area of life, more than in any other year. If you a struggling in life right now, you are not alone. Many of us are right there with you, working hard to feel better, think more clearly, and keep our lives on track.
